Birds Of America, Buku Abad ke-19 Terjual Rp 102 Miliar

Sebuah buku abad 19 bersampul burung langka terjual seharga 7,3 juta poundsterling (Rp 102 miliar). Buku ini jadi termahal di dunia. Apa keistimewaannya?

 

Empat edisi buku Birds of America karangan John James Audubon telah dibeli oleh dealer buku terkenal Michael Tollemache asal London. Tollemache menggambarkan buku panduan pengamatan burung ini sebagai benda tidak ternilai harganya. Ia berhasil mengalahkan para pesaing di arena lelang Sotheby, London, Inggris

Sebelumnya, buku ini diperkirakan terjual dengan harga 4 juta poundsterling (Rp 56 miliar) atau 6 juta poundsterling (Rp 84 miliar). Buku yang mencatat burung dengan ukuran aslinya ini merupakan bagian dari koleksi literatur Frederick Fermor-Hesketh, bangsawan Hesketh kedua.

Buku ini dianggap sangat penting dalam sejarah literatur Inggris karena termasuk di bagian ‘Folio Pertama’. Kedudukannya sama seperti buku Macbeth, The Tempest dan Twelfth Night.

Birds of America terbagi dalam empat edisi dalam kurun 1827 hingga 1838. Buku itu berisi 1.000 ilustrasi 500 jenis burung di mana Audubon membutuhkan 12 tahun untuk menyelesaikannya.

Buku ini menjadi perhatian dunia saat satu dekade sebelumnya, satu salinan lain dijual di lelang mencapai 5,7 juta poundsterling (Rp 79,8 miliar). Hanya sekitar 119 buku Audubon, pria asal Haiti, yang masih bertahan di dunia.[ito]
